The Day Everything Stood Still

 

Such stillness. Not a sound, no breeze to ruffle the leaves of a distant tree. Not even the shriek of a gull. Or the bark of somebody’s dog.

It was so tranquil that it seemed if I sat here on the edge of the unmoving and silent lagoon for all of this day…

that the day and the light of it and the stillness of it and the sheer glory of it would never pass.

And that, in the magnificence of this moment in time, the only thing that could possibly shatter the clear glass of my reflection,

would be a fish falling from the sky, from the talons of a soundless, unseen, great bird…
