Please, could these 2010 World Cup finals just start already!

Forty-two, people. 42. Forty-two days until the 2010 World Cup finals kick off. In our country. South Africa.

And, if the arithmetic old Tom Lambert taught me in Standard Six was correct, seven goes into 42 six times. And that would make it six weeks until the World Cup starts, right? What, you’re only 24? OK, you run along and find your calculator and get back to me. Heavens to Betsy! Go on. Quickly! Move it!

Talking of moving it, let’s warm up for the World Cup by watching a couple of the world’s finest footballers moving it. The ball. And how!

Look. I don’t think anybody is as excited as me about the World Cup that’s coming up. I went to the 1990 one in Italy and had a total blast but… a World Cup finals in my own country? It’s almost too much for me to get my heart around.

Football has always been part of my life. A big part. I used to kick a tennis ball against the wall and practise tricks. You know, keepy-uppy and basic head to knee to foot stuff. But there’s always some smartasses who have to take it to another level.

And they’re all in this little video I’m about to show you. Meet Billy, who takes freestyle football fairly seriously. And his friends Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovich and, master of them all, Ronaldinho.

No, it doesn’t matter if you’re not all that into “soccer”. You know there’s a World Cup about to happen, right? Right. So just watch this… and feel it. Just feel it.

There. That wasn’t so bad, was it? No. I didn’t think it would actually hurt you. How was that “juggly circly” thing Ronaldinho pulled off near the end? Where he made the ball rotate around his foot as if on a thread? How was that? That was insane, my babies!

Jesus wept! I know that these guys can’t afford to try stuff like that during an actual match because, if they bugger it up, the coach (and a few million people back home) would have their goolies for garters… but I still cannot wait for this World Cup to start! Blow the whistle already!
